Queens Market Canopies approved
Planning has been granted for two new timber framed canopies to replace the existing at the front of the market.
Recreating the existing iconic and recognisable arch of the existing canopies, the form offers a contemporary yet sensitive take on an existing landmark. In its design and shape, the concertina's fanned form references offerings traded in the market such as fabric and jewellery whilst embossed finishes allude to the textures found on site. Materials have been chosen to reflect the character and identity of Queen’s Market and Square, whilst being innovative, robust and easy to maintain. The development of Queens Market is part of a wider regeneration project to revitalise one of the borough’s most important retail and shopping area.
Construction works have been progressing on the delivery of the new public toilets and market office since May and this month within the market. The works to Queen's Square are nearly complete, including new large planters and rain gardens, seating and sculptural elements.
