‘Expanding London’s Public Realm’ Design Guide
Pineapple Island at Papers Festival has been featured in ‘Expanding London’s Public Realm’, one of a series of design inquiries to investigate key issues for architecture, urban design and place-shaping, helping to set clear policies and standards. These inquiries are part of Good Growth by Design, the Mayor’s plan to create a city that works for all Londoners.
When asking if the design of the space promotes access for all, the guide recognises how “socially-orientated art practice can play a strong role in helping the public – in general or particular – have ownership over urban spaces, especially when connected to a long-term commissioning process.”
As part of Papers 2016, a festival about the art and architecture of the refugee crisis, a group of asylum seeking children supported by JA Projects in collaboration with the Kent Refugee Action Network set up a temporary restaurant in the Barbican Conservatory and hosted a series of meals, inverting the established logic of ‘hosting’.
